Introduction to PreSchool / CanSkate

Welcome to the CanSkate Program –the learn-to-skate program of Skate Canada.  The objectives of the CanSkate Program  are:

·         To provide basic skating instruction in a group situation.

·         To introduce skaters to the six fundamental movements (Go Forward, Go Backward, Stop, Turn, Jump, and Spin) of skating in a safe, fun environment.

If skaters learn to skate the right way from the very beginning, they will acquire skills that serve them throughout their lives, whether they go on to compete or to skate recreationally.

Parts of a CanSkate Session:

·         Warm-up

·         Lesson Time (skill review, new skills, practice time through use of circuits)

·         Group Activities (Create expression, Skill Development Games/Action songs).

·         Cool down

Coaching

Our professional coaches for Canskate are Donna Horlock and Lois Spate.  A CanSkate Coach must be NCCP Level 1 Certified (National Coaching Certification Program – that includes training in theory, technical and practical components) and have a valid First Aid certificate.  Coaches are assisted on the ice by advanced figure skaters who have been certified Program Assistants.  Program Assistants receive annual and on-going training.  The Program Assistants duties include:

·         Demonstrating skills and teaching progressions.

·         Supervising practice time.

·         Leading warm-ups and cool-downs under the direction of the Skate Canada Coach.

·         Reinforcing learned skills (follow-up on coach instruction).

·         Leading exercises, drills, games, creative expression exercises under the Coach’s direction.

·         Handing out awards and weekly incentives (ribbon, stickers, badges, etc.)

·         Assisting with on-ice circuits.

·         Acting as a role model for young skaters.

We would appreciate if you did not approach the Program Assistants with any questions or concerns, but rather direct them to the professional coaches.
